Definitions of Internet Jargon

 

Domain Name

A domain name, in its most basic form; 'an internet website address'.

Ecommerce Website

Ecommerce means conducting business online. In the traditional sense of selling goods, it is possible to do this electronically because of certain software programs that run the main functions of an e-commerce Website, such as product display, online ordering, and inventory management.

Hyperlink

A hyperlink links a web page to another web page. When a user clicks on a hyperlink, it takes them to a new web page.

Information Website

A website with web pages about a given subject. Such subjects could include, a business, a topic of interest, or, a service being offered.

Page Rank

PageRank results from a 'ballot' among all the other pages on the World Wide Web about how important a page is. A hyperlink to a page counts as a vote of support. A page that is linked to by many pages with high PageRank receives a high rank itself. If there are no links to a web page there is no support for that page. PankRank is scaled from 0 - 10, with 0 meaning the web site has no PageRank.

Search Engine

A web search engine is a tool designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. Common examples are, Google, Yahoo and Live.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Creating and improving a website so that it will rank high in the search engines and help potential customers or clients find the website.

Server Hosting

The service of hosting a site on the Internet making it viewable for other users on the net.

Web Traffic

Web traffic is the amount of data sent and received by visitors to a web site. It is a large portion of Internet traffic. This is determined by the number of visitors and the number of pages they visit.
